The
Vocational Incentive Program's installment of
"The Tsunami Did It...."
The Vocational Incentive Program's water filter project was given a repreive first by a guardian angel donor and shortly thereafter by the tsunami....
In November 2004 we found out that VIP would lose its funding as of January.  Despite the generosity of the people who believed in VIP it needed sustainable funding for another year and we didn't have time to find a source.  Consequently we devised a plan for the calm closing of the ceramic water filter facility.   Before closing the doors we emailed every organization that we could find working in the tsunami region of Thailand telling them about our wonderful, effective water filters.  However the field workers were busy and no one had the time or the authority to make decisions about safe water.  The little refugee run facility was down for the count when the first order for 400 water filters came from an organization (USCRI) working with tsunami victims.  This was quickly followed by orders for 4500 more filters.  VIP was back.
We reminded ourselves, that something good always seems to come even from the worst catastrophies. VIP was saved.
The tears were turned into safe drinking water for thousands.

Safe water for familie
Sometimes we had to distribute filters at night so the police would not arrest the recipients and their employers would not find out that they no longer would need to buy bottled water at inflated prices.

Getting filters ready to distribute
As of October 2005 over 4500 ceramic water filter units have been distributed to tsunami victims in southern Thailand.  They produce enough safe water fo36,000 people.
